European GPPS capacity is approximately 1 million tonnes per year. INEOS Styrolution, Trinseo, Versalis, and Synthos are the major producers. End-use demand splits across rigid packaging — yogurt cups, deli trays, cosmetics bottles (~40%) — thermoformed sheet, foam (XPS, EPS for insulation), and consumer goods.

The market has structurally declined since 2015 as PET took share in clear food packaging and PP gained ground in injection-molded containers. European producers have responded by closing older lines and focusing on specialty and high-clarity grades. Spot availability is generally ample outside cracker turnaround windows.

Pricing drivers

GPPS tracks the European Styrene Monomer Contract Price (SCP), which itself tracks benzene and ethylene economics. Benzene is sourced from refinery reformate or steam cracker pyrolysis gasoline — its price sets the floor for styrene and downstream styrenics.

Margins (SCP-to-GPPS) typically run €200–350/t and have compressed since 2020 as new Asian capacity arrived and European demand fell. ICIS publishes weekly GPPS assessments for general-purpose, high-flow injection, and high-heat grades separately.

What is polystyrene and where do I find it?

Polystyrene is an amorphous styrenic plastic. The crystal-clear rigid version (GPPS, general-purpose polystyrene) is found in disposable cutlery, cosmetics packaging, CD jewel cases, and clear deli trays. The opaque version (HIPS, high-impact polystyrene — see separate entry) is used for yogurt pots and appliance liners. Foamed polystyrene (EPS, expanded polystyrene — 'styrofoam') is the white packaging foam and insulation board. All three carry resin identification code 6.

Is polystyrene safe for food?

GPPS approved for food contact (EU 10/2011 with grade-specific Declaration of Compliance) is safe for cold and ambient food applications. Residual styrene monomer is limited to 0.25% by EU regulation. Polystyrene should NOT be used with hot food or microwaved — the glass transition temperature is around 100 °C, above which the material softens and can crack or distort. There is no convincing evidence of styrene migration at consumer-relevant levels in current food-contact GPPS.

Is polystyrene recyclable?

Technically yes, but practical recycling rates in Europe are low. Polystyrene contaminates the PET and PP recyclate streams at MRFs, and dedicated PS sortation requires specialist infrastructure. Some countries (Netherlands, Germany) have improving PS recycling capacity. EPS (expanded polystyrene, 'styrofoam') is the harder problem — its 95–98% air content makes transport uneconomical. Several producers have voluntarily moved away from PS in food packaging in favour of PP and PET.

Is styrofoam the same as polystyrene?

'Styrofoam' is a brand name owned by Dow that originally referred to a specific extruded polystyrene (XPS) building insulation product. In common usage, 'styrofoam' is used for any expanded polystyrene (EPS) foam — the white packaging beads and food containers. Both are forms of polystyrene, but EPS (the white packaging foam) and XPS (the typically blue or pink insulation board) are different products with different properties.
