Polymer sourcing for kitchenware and food storage
Reusable food containers, mixing bowls, measuring jugs, and chopping boards. Food contact compliance and dishwasher resistance are non-negotiable.
Recommended polymers
Polypropylene
PPVersatile commodity polyolefin. Highest European production volume after PE. Homopolymer, random and impact copolymer grades cover injection, extrusion, fiber, film.
High-Density Polyethylene
HDPELinear polyethylene with density above 0.941 g/cm³. Used for blow-molded bottles, pressure pipes, and rigid containers.
Key requirements
- EU 10/2011 food-contact compliance with grade-specific Declaration of Compliance
- Dishwasher cycle resistance to 90 °C with no warpage
- Microwave compatibility for PP grades; opaque only for HDPE
- Optical clarity for clear food storage (clarified random copolymer PP)
Procurement notes
Clarified random copolymer PP — typically nucleated with Milliken Millad NX8000 or equivalent — dominates clear food storage. Specific grades like Borealis BH345MO or LyondellBasell Hostalen ACP are widely qualified at major converters. HDPE blow grade covers opaque containers and lids. Microwave-safe claims need PP exclusively (HDPE deforms at 130 °C). Major retail brands (Tupperware, IKEA 365+, Sistema) work direct with producers; private-label OEMs source through compounders.
